View of the church "St. Mary" during the prayer for George Kondolov chieftain, leader of the Ilinden Uprising.

The church is the oldest Orthodox church in the city (now altered appearance). It was built in 1869 (construction continued for thirty years) as a Greek church and the liturgy was in greek and implemented by the greek clergy to 1906. The facade of the church was built under the influence of Nessebar medieval church architecture. With the advent of socialism beautiful limestone facade of the temple was dressed and hidden in solid white stone.
South of the church was located two-story Greek school, renamed "Tzar Krum".
The square of the church "St. Mary" was called "Papazmeydan" and was the main city square in the years after Liberation, one of the most communicative places in the city, located between the port and customs, administrative and commercial center.
